Kids' holiday activities in Austin

There is so much for kids to do in Central Texas during the holiday season. I may complain that it's colder than I like, but our mild winters mean that there are outdoor holiday activities every weekend.

Here are the top things on our agenda:

Chuy's Children Giving to Children Christmas Parade. We didn't make it last year, but this picture is from the year before. There are wonderful floats and marching bands, and the local Blue Santa effort collects toys for needy children. This year, the Chuy's Parade will be held on November 29, starting at 11:00 am at the State Capitol.

The Zilker Park Trail of Lights is another favourite of mine. It's a lovely walk through incredible light displays culminating at the Tree of Lights. I can't wait to show the girls how to go inside the tree and twirl until it looks like the tree is rotating. The Trail of Lights will be open December 14th through 23rd, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Last year, we had a great time at the Georgetown Christmas Stroll. There were hundreds of booths, a wonderful life-sized and activity-filled model of a Jewish village as it would have been 2000 years ago, and a number of moonwalks for kids of different ages. We'll be out of town this year; the Stroll is scheduled for December 6, noon to 8:00 pm in downtown Georgetown.

It looks like we've already missed getting our tickets for the North Pole Flyer steam train to Burnet for 2008. Perhaps I'll manage to plan for it next year.

The BLORA Nature in Lights display sounds like it's worth checking out. It runs November 21 – January 4, from 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm every night. Santa's Village opened yesterday. We'll be in Killeen for Thanksgiving anyway, and Santa's Village is conveniently open that day.

I prefer to stay off the roads on New Year's Eve, but First Night Austin is an alcohol-free and family-friendly New Year's Eve celebration. It features local arts, crafts and business. A schedule should be available on the First Night website on December 1.

If you know of any other toddler-friendly events in the area this holiday season, please let me know.
